Tarompet Pencak fingering techniques exploration as a music education learning resource

Abstract

The Pencak Trumpet is a traditional Sundanese instrument that plays an important role in folk arts, such as pencak silat, reak, and benjang. Despite its significant musical function, studies on its playing techniques, particularly the fingering of the salendro scale, are still limited and have not been utilized as a learning resource in music arts education. This study aims to explore the fingering, breathing, and organology of the Pencak Trumpet in the salendro scale, and to analyze its potential as a learning resource rooted in local culture. Because knowledge of these playing techniques is largely passed down orally, systematic documentation is essential to support their preservation and learning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with an ethnomusicological perspective, data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review at the Gangsa Harsa Studio in Bandung. The results indicate three fingering styles (Olet, Odang, and Tjutju Hadijat) and three main breathing techniques (lamus, totot, and ombak). The synergy among Tjutju Hadijat's fingering style, mastery of breathing techniques, and understanding of organology offers a strong conceptual foundation that can be developed into a comprehensive learning resource for local culture-based music education.
